In his recent brilliant essay for the First Things Journal, N. T. Wright examines and exposes how Western culture has divorced the pursuit of knowledge from its proper God-ordained nesting place, the pursuit of relational love. Paul indicates this human problem in the passage below. Dr. Wilder’s book, Renovated, unveils how this problem is confirmed from his expert research in neurotheology. God seems to be working in our day though clear prophetic voices and events to call us all back to the “more excellent way” that the apostle Paul articulated so long ago in 1 Corinthians 13. He had to write a whole chapter for the Greek world to hopefully grasp the many-layered meaning of the Hebrew word for lovingkindness … hesed. I know many highly-educated church and ministry leaders who now lament that they didn’t have one class on “how to love” during their years of theological training. Just maybe we need to truly love in order to truly learn?
“But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power … always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.”
